Henry County, Indiana, is having a birthday, and yes… there will be a party. In fact, the celebrations have already started for the County’s Bicentennial and will culminate in June. HOOPLA!- Celebrate basketball, the bicentennial, and FUN at this day-long street festival happening at Baker Park and Main Street (section by Baker Park). This event happening Saturday, June 25, will include bands, food trucks, games, vendor booths, and more.
Record-Setting Knockout Game- In addition to the HOOPLA festival on June 25, there is more basketball fun happening nearby (walking distance) at the New Castle High School Fieldhouse. Join 800+ of your fellow basketball fans in the world’s largest high school fieldhouse to play the world’s largest game of “knockout.” This is a fast-paced free-throw shooting competition that will keep everyone moving and having a great time. Donut Hole-Eating Contest- Jack’s Donuts and New Castle Main Street are hosting a donut hole-eating contest on Friday, May 27. This will be a sanctioned Major League Eating competition for competitive eaters including the legendary Joey Chestnut. While amateurs won’t be participating in the donut hole eating on stage, there will be basketball donuts available for sale. This event headlines the first “Fourth Friday” celebration in Downtown New Castle.
Magical History Tour- This series of history-based events is happening at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library, and programs begin at 6 pm in the library’s auditorium. Learn about women in Henry County history on March 10 and the life of Robert Indiana (creator of the iconic LOVE sculpture who was born in New Castle) on April 14. May’s program is about the history of Henry County churches on May 12.
Tuesday Talkies- The Henry County Art Center will host weekly movie nights on Tuesdays in June featuring films that are related to Henry County. Watch the Art Center website for updates.
Ice Cream Social- The Henry County Historical Society and Museum will host a day of history and ice cream on Saturday, June 11.
Bicentennial Golf Outing- Gather a team and play a round of golf on Monday, June 20, at Memorial Park Golf Course. All proceeds for the golf outing and any funds that exceed costs during the bicentennial will go towards the Henry County 529 program, which aims to start a 529 education savings account for every student in Henry County.
